BMSS Recognizes Mike Morris with BMSS Medal

1st Nov 2024

At the recent annual conference of the British Mass Spectrometry Society meeting (BMSS-BSPR Supermeeting) held between 4th-6th September at the University of Warwick, Dr Mike Morris was awarded the BMSS Medal for his sustained contributions to the BMSS and the wider MassSpec community!

The British Mass Spectrometry Society established the BMSS Medal in 2002 at the 115th meeting of the BMSS committee. This very occasional award is established to recognise sustained contributions by individual members of the British Mass Spectrometry Society to the promotion and advancement of mass spectrometry, primarily within the UK. The awardee will be an ambassador of mass spectrometry, developing student and individual education, increasing awareness of mass spectrometry and its utility in science through long-term contributions to the BMSS and/or scientific literature and the representation and communication of mass spectrometry within the wider scientific community.

Mike has been a long-standing member and supporter of the BMSS and has contributed to the UK Mass spectrometry field enormously over the years. Mike has inspired many people he has worked and interacted with over the years and has been particularly passionate about bringing MS capabilities closer to high-impact clinical applications. It is entirely fitting that this award was to be presented to Mike, a very well-deserved award which rendered Mike speechless during the conference dinner when he heard Professor Neil Oldham's (Immediate past chair of BMSS) announcement!

Mike Morris earned his PhD in mass spectrometry from the University of Manchester in 1988. After pursuing rewarding research opportunities in places such as Japan, the USA, and Canada, Mike accepted a job at VG/Micromass/Waters in the R&D department in 1994, and he has been working with this company ever since. During this time, Mike has served as head of the organization’s Clinical Applications Group (1999) and as Senior Director of Mass Spectrometry Research (2010). Over the course of his career, Mike has coauthored over 70 scientific publications and has helped organize numerous mass spec conferences and society meetings. He is an inventor of over 25 granted U.S. patents and is af filiated with a number of notable professional societies. His research contributions in several clinical areas - particularly neonatal screening - have helped push mass spectrometry applications into many exciting new fields and work environments. More recently, his research has focused on advancing mass spec instrumentation and capabilities as part of the Waters Research team1.
